House on the Lake
Warmth. Subtlety. Lake view. This is the triad that we kept in mind throughout the design process. While it can sometimes be a challenge to build near water, on sloped terrain, it certainly makes for an opportunity to immerse both the building and the occupant into the landscape. In this sense, the house remains as closed as possible on the entry and side facades, only to open completely towards the lake, allowing the family to admire the sunset from almost every room.
The thin dark glass frames, railings and open pergolas bring in elegance and contrast to the rougher, natural tinted wood siding. The thick concrete platform, on which the timber structure is set, is also given a black wood finish, further emphasizing horizontality. The large soffit and low-rise roof compliment these elements, making reference to the 50’s architectural trends in California.
